MANDATORY EQUIPMENT LIST Mandatory Team Equipment     

Be sure to make a list of ALL the equipment needed.
You do not want to miss anything.

This includes the Mandatory equipment for the whole race,
as well as the equipment needed for the specialized discipline.

Equipment that must be carried by the "Team" at all times.
  • A Compass.
  • A typical first aid kit suitable for use during an Adventure Race. We won't specify the exact contents if this "First Aid Kit", that we feel should be up to the teams on their skill level as well as their own personal injury tendencies. A typical "First Aid Kit" could consists of the following items, but not mandatory to include them all.
Band-Aids, (Assorted sizes.) And / Or "Moleskin" or a liquid type "Bandage"

Electrolyte Replacement Tablets, or equivalent supplement. (E-Caps/Hammer Gel)

Sterile gauze dressing

1 roll duct tape, small

Elastic wrap (ACE bandage or similar)

Any desirable pain relief medication, Aspirin, Tylenol, etc. In the amount required to supply all team members for a 24 hour period.

Antibiotic/burn w/pain relief gel packets (or 1 small tube)

1 forceps, (tweezers) splinter remover

1 bandage scissors (or a good knife...)

1 pair of nitrile, or if not allergic to latex, latex gloves

If needed, "Personal"  Medical supplies, ( bee sting kit, poison Ivy lotions, etc.)

Highly recomended, But not mandatory, a Cell Phone for emergency use only.

Equipment to be carried at all times by each team member. 

  • A survival blanket/space blanket

  • A Method, or system, for carrying adequate supplies of fluids. And / Or a water purification system, (filters, tablets, etc.) This is August after all, and it might be very HOT. While this IS a supported race, and your support team can re-supply you with needed equipment and or supplies, like fluids, food, rappelling gear, etc.  There are a few stretches where you will NOT see your support team for a long time, and that's only if you don't get lost!
  • An Emergency "Card" That has any important medical alerts, allergies, contact people, ect. that will be needed.(should a medical emergency arise.)

CANOE / KAYAK SECTION

          If you have a canoe or kayak that you think is faster or you're more familiar with, you can use it.    You will be allowed to use your own Canoe or Kayak in the race. Or if you choose to do so, you can use one of the rentals from the outfitter on our front page.

          But these rentals are of a limited supply.    And they will be reserved on a first come,
first reserved basis, to not only the teams in this race,, but the general public also.  So, register early if you want to garantee having one (or two) to use.
        

          Of course if you will be using your own Canoe or Kayak, your support crew will need to take them to the start area of the paddling section of the course. So they will be there when you need them.

Mandatory Swimming / Canoe / Kayak Equipment

  • A life jacket suitable for Swimming/Canoeing/Kayaking.
  • An additional item for additional bouyancy, Innertube, air mattress, Boogie Board, etc. something you can take with you in addition to your life jacket for additional floatation of possible equipment and / or yourself.


Mandatory Biking Equipment

  • Of course a bike suitable for all types of surfaces.   Any type of Bike will be allowed.
  • A properly rated bike helmet .
There will be a "Dark Zone"  (pun intended) Where if you arrive at the biking leg of the race and it is still dark, you will not be allowed to proceed until the "Dark Zone" has ended.
The "Dark Zone" ends at 6 AM. 
But you can proceed on into the "Dark Zone"
Only if
your bike is properly lighted., AND REFLECTORIZED!
As described in Wisconsin Satutes shown below...
Pay special attention to the statutes wordings. You won't want to sit out for several hours just because you did not read it correctly.


Lamps and other equipment on bicycles, motor bicycles, and electric personal assistive mobility devices.


(1)
No person may operate a bicycle, motor bicycle, or electric personal assistive mobility device upon a highway, sidewalk, bicycle lane, or bicycle way during hours of darkness unless the bicycle, motor bicycle, or electric personal assistive mobility device is equipped with or, with respect to a bicycle or motor bicycle, the operator is wearing, a lamp emitting a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front of the bicycle, motor bicycle, or electric personal assistive mobility device.

(2) A bicycle, motor bicycle, or electric personal assistive mobility device shall also be equipped with a red reflector that has a diameter of at least 2 inches of surface area or, with respect to an electric personal assistive mobility device, that is a strip of reflective tape that has at least 2 square inches of surface area, on the rear so mounted and maintained as to be visible from all distances from 50 to 500 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful upper beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle.

(3) A lamp emitting a red or flashing amber light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear may be used in addition to but not in lieu of the red reflector.


Ropes Section

     Now don't be scared off here! If you do not have the equipment, or If you are just plain afraid of  heights, we have a "By-Pass" for those of you for any reason that just can not do the event. The "By-Pass" Will allow you to continue on in the race fully ranked, but without doing the ropes section. 

Rope Course Equipment Requirements:

  • One UIAA certified climbing helmet

  • One climbing harness

  • Three locking carabineers

  • One tubular rappel device (ATC or similar) Or a "Figure 8"   Which will be allowed this year.
  • A Daisy Chain
  • A Method of Self Belaying such as:

"Friction Knots" Using a loop of cord which you can make a self-jamming knot  (Prusik, Machard, etc.).using 6 or 7mm accessory cord and a double fisherman's knot.    EXAMPLE

Petzl Shunt Descender

A mechanical replacement for self-jamming knots (Prusik, Machard, etc.).

  • When positioned below the descender, the SHUNT can be used as a back-up device to protect a descent on rappel.
  • Brakes when device is released.  EXAMPLE

Self-braking descender for single rope

  • Self-braking system operates when the handle is released.
  • The rate of descent is controlled by varying the grip on the free end of the rope.
  • Spring clip allows the rope to be inserted without removing the STOP from the harness.

HIGHLY! Recommended But Not Mandatory Equipment

  • A pair of leather roper's/belay gloves. Or at the minimum a pair of  leather or suede palm covered biking gloves.

     All of the climbing gear is NOT mandatory. You may choose to take the By-Passes for the rappel, so no climbing gear here is needed at all. But remember,  Taking the By-Passes will take you longer than doing the ropes course.

Forbidden! Equipment

  • Weapons of any kind
  • Any Kind Of Global Positioning System Equipment  (GPS)
  • Any maps other than those provided by the event organizers
Possession of any of these is grounds for immediate disqualification.

PENALTIES

  • A team in which one member has withdrawn, or dropped out for any reason will be officially disqualified. The team may continue on the course as an Personal Challenge, and are now  Un-Ranked, but for them the "Race" is over. 
  • Failure to follow staff instructions on safety or any other directions will result in immediate disqualification of the team.

  • For the most part penalties will consist of a 30 minute "Quarantine" where you will be held at the point of the discovery of the violation for a period of 30 minutes, before being allowed to continue on. Or the possibility of changing the teams status to an UN-Ranked team, if the violation is extreme, and,  or, possibly both.  In the most extreme case you may be possibly removed from the course completely. 

Don't Forget! One More Thing,,

  • Do not forget your totally waterproof container/envelope thing to hold all your maps, Paperwork's, etc.
